NCDBW's Position on the Death Penalty

In keeping with our overriding goal of reducing the incidence of violence in our society, the National Clearinghouse for the Defense of Battered Women opposes capital punishment under all circumstances. We are especially concerned for those women charged with capital crimes or facing execution, and whose cases involved self-defense, defense of others or duress as mitigating circumstances or as defenses arising out of their experiences as battered women. Accordingly, the National Clearinghouse is cooperating with the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty and will consider future work that incorporates opposition to capital punishment as it relates to the defense of battered women.
